Natural Dyes for Your Easter Eggs

Evelyn Vincent

Dyeing eggs with natural substances doesn't take much more time than if you used commercial coloring kits - and it's alot more fun.

You can be very creative with what is in your kitchen already and your Easter eggs can come out very unique.

Here are the colors and the substance that makes those colors.

These are either a spice, fruit, vegetable, or foodstuff that will color your Easter in a very safe way:

Red or Pink: Red beets, cranberries, frozen raspberries

Light Green: Spinach leaves

Yellow: Ground Cumin, Ground Tumeric, Shredded carrots

Blue: Blueberries, blackberries, red cabbage leaves, grape juice

Purple: Red Zinger tea (by Celestial Seasonings)

Brown: Brewed coffee

Here's how to make your dye:

Ingredients:

1 Tbsp. spice or 4 c. chopped fruit or vegetable, or more

4 c. water, or more

2 TBSP white vinegar (per 4 c. water)

Directions:

Combine spice or foodstuff with water and vinegar.

Bring to a boil, then simmer for 15 to 30 minutes.

Eggs can be colored and cooked in the dye while it is being prepared. Or, they can be hard-cooked in advance, then dipped into the prepared dye (which can be either cold or hot).

Essential Oils vs. Dried Spices

Shayla Pollert

I recently ran out of dried thyme spice, and although it was a good brand, I have no intention of purchasing more. Why? Essential oils!! Pure, Therapeutic grade essential oils from Young Living make not only a more flavorful way to season, but a waaaaaay more economical purchase as well!

Consider the following;

A 15ml(average essential oil size)bottle contains around 250 drops of essential oils.

In most recipes, one drop is all you would ever need, and with strong oils like oregano, thyme, marjoram, and basil, you only need a half a drop!

If you used the bottle of essential oil at this rate it would last around a year, even if you cooked with it every day! Considering most of us wouldn't use it everyday it would last much longer.

In addition to this, most of us purchase a little bottle of spices for anywhere from $4.00 on up, only to use a small amount while the rest sits in our cabinet. As anyone who watches the Food Network knows, spices are supposed to be replaced yearly if they have not been used up. Not so with essential oils! Spice oils will last indefinitely (however, they should be kept in a cooler area-not right above the stove).

How to get less then one drop of essential oils:

All you need is a clean spoon! Simply tilt the bottle of essential oil on it's side, and the instant you see the oil starting to collect in the center dropper area, touch the spoon to it and viola!

Place in an unbaked pie shell and apply an egg wash around the edge of the shell. Add the pie top and pinch the edges together. Make at least four two-inch slits on top of the pie to release steam. Place on a baking sheet and bake at 375˚ for ten minutes. Reduce heat to 350˚ and bake an additional fifteen minutes, or until crust is lightly browned. Makes filling for one pie.

Shayla's KimChi with Essential Oils

Shayla Pollert

2 heads cabbage, chopped fairly fine

2 carrots, sliced very thin or grated

1 small onion, chopped

2 cups chopped broccoli

1 drop Young Living oregano oil*

1 drop Young Living thyme oil*

1 drop Young Living ginger oil*

juice of 2 lemons

1 or 2 capsules of Life 5 (optional)

2 teaspoons salt (may need more to taste but be careful not to get too much in)

2-3 wide mouth quart jars with lids

*Note, Only Therapeutic Grade oils should ever be used internally as they are safe. See my article on Aromatherapy Labeling Fraud

Mix all ingredients well and let them sit for 10 minutes to get the juices going. Stir again and begin packing one cup at a time into a wide mouth jar, taking care to pack it down very firmly with your fist. It is important that the juices come over the top of the vegetables. Continue adding cupfuls until you have filled the jar to 1 1-2 inches from the top (taking care to pack it down). Continue with the remaining vegetables and jars. Pour any remaining juice over the tops of the vegetables, cover tightly and place in an area around 70 to 80 degrees F. Fermentation process will take 3 to 5 days.

The jars may leak juices through the top due to expansion so be sure to set them on a towel or a plate just in case. You will know they are done when the color goes from pale green to a pale yellow. Once they are done, place them in the refrigerator to stop the fermentation process and enjoy! Use KimChi within 2-3 months.

Flavored Water: no calories!

Evelyn Vincent

One of my favorite ways to use my Young Living essential oils is in a glass of water, very refreshing. For those who are watching their weight, this is an excellent to get a nice flavor and no calories! Additionally, you will be getting the benefit of these powerful essential oils.

To an 8 oz. glass of water (please do not use a plastic or styrofoam cup) add "ONE" drop of any of the following essential oils:

Singles: Peppermint, Lemon, Grapefruit, Tangerine, Lemongrass, Orange, Spearmint, Frankincense.

Blends: Citrus Fresh, Thieves, EndoFlex, Di-Gize, Longevity.

Note: do not use more than one single drop, the Young Living oils that can be taken internally are extremely potent. It is said that "one" drop of Young Living pepermint essential oil is the equivalent of 28 cups of Peppermint Tea - so use a very light touch.
